The B.B. King
Museum and Delta Interpretive Center officially opened September 13,
2008 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Check out the Museum’s slide show
of the full weekend of celebrations, a truly Grand Opening that began
on Thursday with a parade of over 1000 harmonica-playing students led
by musical great Billy Branch and ended with a Gospel and Grits brunch
on Sunday. In between we welcomed B.B.‘s friends and family to the
Museum and nearby Club Ebony, offered a Sneak Preview to the local
community, and toasted our magnificent donors. Recording stars Robert
Cray, Keb ‘Mo and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, as well as blues legend and
B.B.‘s longtime friend Bobby “Blue” Bland, joined B.B. in performing on
Saturday night in a tent on the Museum grounds. Throughout the weekend
entertainment was provided by local musicians from the stage in the
gift shop and in the tent, and the entire city of Indianola presented
activities for children and families including tours of the town by
tractor-drawn open trailers. B.B. played into the wee hours of both
Saturday and Sunday mornings at Club Ebony to standing-room-only
crowds. It was a celebration worthy of the Delta and Mr. King, and set
the tone for the Museum as a gathering place and center of artistic and
cultural life in the area.
