Docents are tour guides who lead observation- and inquiry-based tours. No experience is required to become a docent for the B.B. King Museum, although, an initial orientation is a must! Enthusiasm and commitment are the main qualifications needed.
Docents should feel comfortable speaking in public and be able to “take charge” and guide visitors through the exhibition. They also need to be willing to devote time to learning about the exhibition..
The interpretive or educational role of the docent is the most important and challenging aspect of the job. In order to be effective, a docent should not just lecture to an audience, but help the visitor attain some sort of "ownership" of the exhibit content, and provide a broader understanding of the exhibition's concepts.
