Art of Living Smart Summer Program

The Art of Living Smart summer program aims to use the arts - music, dance and visual arts such as painting and collage, as well as the culinary arts - to encourage young people to adopt healthy eating habits and active lifestyles.

During this four week program, campers spend each afternoon in a wide variety of activities - planting and tending vegetable and herb gardens; preparing healthy snacks; learning dance steps, fitness moves and exercise techniques to stay fit; performing music on various instruments; creating works of art with watercolors, collage, mobiles, and even food!

Campers learn the specifics of how their bodies function and how their daily lifestyle choices - what they eat, how they exercise, how they spend their time - affect their moods, energy levels and academic performance. This program, based in the arts, engages students in a safe and entertaining summer morning or afternoon alternative, all while challenging the current health and lifestyle conditions that children in the Delta and their families are facing today.

Participants also engage in reading and writing exercises, including some fun projects to take home to share, that improve their readiness for learning when school reconvenes in the Fall.  In addition, field trips are planned to introduce new experiences and reinforce the concepts.  These are also fun rewards at the end of a busy week.

The final performance for family and friends showcases newfound talents and developing skills.  The campers even make the refreshments -- all healthful, of course!
